Barn Burner Magazine Interview
When did you first begin writing erotic fiction?
In the fall of 2003. Yup, that recently. Hard to believe that I’ve come (no pun intended) so far, so fast! I figure if I’m gonna expend the energy to do it, I might as well take it to the wall. Kinda my attitude about sex, too! *grin*
Does anyone close to you know that you write erotica? If so, what was their reaction?
Yeah. My bestest buddy knows, and she’s been instrumental in encouraging me to keep writing. (I think she likes it, y’know? REALLY likes it, if you catch my drift. *wink*)
My writing partner, Will Belegon, knows (of course) … and I think it’s safe to say that he is behind me all the way.
A few others in my life know I am an author, but they’ve not read my work. I’m sure they’re quite curious. They’re gonna have to stay that way, though, since I’ve no intention of exposing my young children to the provincial attitudes they’d undoubtedly face if it became known that their mama writes about some seriously uninhibited sex.
Has writing erotica affected your professional life?
Writing erotica IS my professional life. My other energies are focused on parenting and volunteer advocacy activities, with random paid gigs for web site development, conference presentations, and *ahem* “motivational” speaking.
What do you feel is the difference between erotica and romance?
Sex, of course. The traditional romance community, I believe, often turns up its nose at erotica – as if it’s the black sheep in the family – but I think that attitude is probably rooted in fear. Romance is nice, yes. Warm fuzzies and happily-ever-afters are nice. But, let’s face it, erotica is wildly popular because sex is wildly popular (and with damned good reason).
Have you written erotica based on your real life experiences?
Ah, the inevitable “autobiographical” question. *snicker* I’ll leave it up to the readers to decide whether or not I have an intimate knowledge of what I write. M’kay?
I will confess, however, that my story about being tongue fucked by ghouls is 100% true. *wink*
How has writing erotica affected your sex life?

Amanda Long nudged open the office door with her toe and finished the job with her hip. The large box she held blocked her view of Bruce, who sat at the large desk. He pecked at the keyboard with two fingers, a deep crease in his brow.
"Little help here, stud?" she called with just a hint of annoyance in her voice. "This is heavy."
Bruce grunted his displeasure at the interruption as he circled the desk to relieve Mandy of her burden. "Lemme guess," his tone softening somewhat when he felt its weight, "you're adding bowling balls to the inventory?"
"Just batteries, Einstein. Most vibrators need batteries, after all. I thought it was a logical addition."
With a heavy sigh, Mandy plopped onto the sofa. While she loved running Erotique, the famous sex toy shop and museum took nearly all her time and energy. Bruce's, too. It seemed they spent more nights on the inflatable mattress in the cramped office than they did in their nice new apartment.
"Over there," she pointed in response to his unspoken question, and watched with weary admiration as he effortlessly placed the box where indicated. Even through the pinpoint oxford, his shoulders were quite impressive. When he joined her on the sofa, she swung her opposite leg across his lap and straddled him in one fluid motion.
"I'm sorry I've been such a bitch lately. We're both working way too hard. We need more play time, and I don't just mean sex—although more of that would be nice, too. So tell me, counselor," she continued after a conciliatory kiss, "is this lawsuit going forward?"
Bruce shrugged and ran a hand through his hair. "That's what I was working on when you came in. It's the price of success, Man. The vultures smell a great big liability policy. Their case is without merit and they know it. They're just hopin' you'll settle for fifty grand or so just to make 'em go away. Might not be a bad idea, y'know. Insurance'll cover the settlement, and I'll take a blow job in lieu of my attorney fee. It's a steal, I tell ya."
"There is no way I'm settling! That'd be like hanging a sign over the door: Frivolous Lawsuits Welcome. As for your fee," she paused to wiggle her bottom in an intentionally stirring manner, "do you barter this way with all your clients?"
"Only the feisty entrepreneurs who give incredible head," Bruce confessed with a wink. "Let's go home tonight, Man. It's supposed to storm—the first real thunderstorm of the season—and I want to spend it in our new bed with you wrapped around me."
"Mmm. Sounds good to me. I'll have Sam close so we can leave early, too. Let's get some wine and cheese—oh, and some fresh fruit. I wanna have a mattress picnic."

"You'll need sustenance, counselor. Trust me on this one. C'mon," she stood and tugged on Bruce's hands. "Let's get out o' here before someone tries to stop us. I'll go make sure everything's squared away with the staff. You finish up your paperwork. Meet you at Appetites to fill our picnic basket. How's twenty minutes sound? Oh, and bring that box on the desk, too. Somethin' new to—um—field test."
"Bossy bitch." He grinned. "The things I do to get my cock sucked these days. Sheesh!"

Bruce gave a tired grin. "I told you before, Jay. I'm neither a great white shark nor Australian."

"Actually," Bruce said with a conspiratorial wink, "we're sneaking out. One pic-a-nic basket to go, please, Ranger Smith."
"Comin' right up, Yogi."
"You boys and your cartoons! Enough already!" Mandy's amused tone lightened her harsh words. She really enjoyed the playful side of Bruce and the way he could effortlessly fall into a natural banter with just about anyone. "Please, Jay, if we could have a little mix of cheese and fruit to make up a basket? Since Mother Nature seems determined to be a bitch tonight, we thought we'd have an indoor picnic—complete with a couple of bottles of good wine."
"I got just the thing, Ms. Long. Gimme a few minutes to put it together?"
"Certainly. I'm sure Bruce and I can keep ourselves occupied while you manage that." She turned to Bruce as Jay busied himself with their order. "So, counselor, did you remember to bring my surprise? There's more than wine and cheese on the menu tonight."

Plain old courtship just doesn't seem to cut it anymore. At least not with readers of romance novels. More women want more fiction about what's going on between the sheets, book publishers say.
"If you had said five years ago, 'erotic, hot, sexy romances,' people would have said 'What, are you crazy?' " says Kensington editor in chief John Scognamiglio. "Publishing goes in cycles. Erotica now seems to be the new hot thing."
Kensington introduced its erotica line, Aphrodisia, in January. Harlequin's Spice imprint hits stores in May, and HarperCollins will publish the first two titles in its Avon Red line in June. Berkley was a pioneer with its Heat line last May.
"Over the past few years, romances have gotten sexier," says Liate Stehlik of Avon Red, "And with the advent of Sex and the City and more sex in movies and online, there's a sexual aspect to all forms of entertainment that women are feeling more entitled to than they have in the past."
Mainstream bookstores also are finding erotica attractive.
Since Borders began carrying women's erotica in summer 2004, growth has been in the double digits, spokeswoman Beth Bingham says. "The customer is predominantly the existing romance customer."

Father Secco paused in his preparation for Sunday’s sermon when the recently-hired cleaning girl appeared in his peripheral vision. “Yes, Carlotta? What is it?” he asked without looking up.
“Please to excuse, padre.” Her voice dropped an octave, “Is this.”
It took him a moment to decipher what sounded like ees dees before lifting just his eyes to discover Carlotta holding a plastic grocery bag at arm’s length from her body as if its contents might suddenly explode. As he met her gaze, a blush crept up her neck and lit upon her full cheeks, making her appear even younger.
Father Secco rose and circled his desk, relieving Carlotta of the bag. Free of its burden, her body immediately relaxed, and her hands clasped one another just below her ample bosom.
“I…I found eet in the confessional,” she stammered, “just like the other.”
He took a quick peek into the bag, nodded once, and thanked Carlotta for bringing it to his attention. “There’s no need to bother anyone else about this,” he cautioned as he herded her toward the door. “I’ll take care of it.”
Carlotta crossed herself and muttered, “SÃ, padre. Gracias.”
His heart racing, Father Secco closed the door to his office and pressed the knob’s button to lock it. He placed the bag on his desk and fetched a small key from the compartment of a hollow crucifix—one which once held a small vial of holy water. Taking a deep breath to quell the tremor in his hands, he inserted the key into the upper left desk drawer and slowly pulled it open. Her perfume—the vanilla musk—greeted him, flooding his mind with memories of that Saturday morning when he first heard her confession.
The black patent leather stiletto—never worn, from the look of its sole—had the drawer to itself, which was quite an honor considering the substantial clutter elsewhere. On the instep in flowing red script, a simple query:
Remember me?
Indeed, he did. In fact, he dreamt of her often; his seed soaking the sheets as he slept. How could he possibly forget the whisper rasp of her hands against the fabric of her clothes, the husky guttural sound of her voice as she climaxed, and the overwhelmingly enticing scent of her arousal in the close confines of the confessional? You will be whisked to Costa Rica where the rain has a unique seductive quality, then you will be sitting amiably and laughing with friends who are discussing the amorous meaning behind what pizza toppings they choose. The sexual scenes are plentiful and filled with sizzling desire and romance. The poetry is placed artfully between each story and is a wonderful break for reflection and contemplation. Each story was a distinct pleasure to read and explore. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves romantic erotica.

This truly is not for the faint at heart. If you're looking for hot & steamy then these short stories are for you. Each story tells of its own sex encounter and some continue into other stories. The poetry that is scatted within is just as equally hot.
Ms. Brio has written pure unadulterated sex! No beating around the bush with these stories. They are very open & honest. ...I can say fans of Ms. Brio will not be disappointed.

Riding Bare Back

- Alessia, I want to thank you for interviewing with Bare Back Magazine. Can you tell us about your background and how did you decide to become an erotic author?
My “background” has nothing at all to do with writing or publishing. I have a degree in mathematics, of all things, and I worked for the federal government as a computer scientist for almost 10 years before quitting to have a family.
I started writing – essays, articles, OpEds – when I became a civil rights activist. However, I didn’t pen a word of fiction – erotic or otherwise – until just over three years ago (in the late summer of 2003). Apparently, the erotic fantasies in my head reached critical mass and demanded to be set free. Poetry is an even more recent fetish. - How would you describe your style of writing? And what would readers expect from your stories?
I write very concise prose. Every word counts – much like poetry – yet my work is evocative and flowing. My style is ideally suited for short stories. I pride myself in being able to pack a lot of emotion into a small package, and I have a knack for dialogue.
Readers can expect strong women, lots of humor, a heaping dose of irreverence, and very hot erotic encounters. No alpha males and damsels in distress for this author. I can’t write what I wouldn’t want to read. - How many erotic stories and poems have you written in total?
In addition to the eight short stories & eight poems in fine flickering hungers, I’ve completed another twenty-two short stories & twenty-eight poems. I also have two novel-length works in progress and several short stories. - Where do you get your ideas for your stories? Do you have a process that gives you your inspiration to write?
Inspiration comes from all angles and can hit at any time. A lot of times a story idea will grow out of a conversation with my bestest buddy. I’m not (yet) disciplined enough as a professional writer to have a “process.” - Are your stories and poetry from your personal experiences or purely from your fantasies? Also, do you enjoy writing stories better or poetry?
You really think I’m going to fess up to writing autobiographical erotica? *snort* How ‘bout you read my work – and then you can decide for yourself if I have an intimate knowledge of what I write, eh?
I enjoy writing poetry and prose equally, but my poetry muse is a fickle bitch. - What is the most challenging part of writing erotic stories? And what advice would you give others who are interested in becoming erotic writers?
The biggest challenge, for me, was letting go of any trace of propriety. You simply cannot write sizzling hot sex if you’re holding back for any reason. Advice to aspiring writers? Release your inner slut! There is an element of exhibitionism in writing erotica. Get over it. Better yet, revel in it. Only then will your erotic prose feel authentic to the reader. - How long have you been a Phaze author? How did the opportunity to write with Phaze come about?
Just over six months. I got “the call” from Phaze in late June of 2005. I’ve long been a fan of Piers Anthony, so Mundania Press (and Phaze, its erotic imprint) held a certain name appeal. After reading the no-nonsense sample contract, I knew I need look no further. I’m not interested in pursuing other relationships unless it’s for work which Phaze chooses not to publish. - Do you have any up coming writing projects and what can we expect from any of those projects?
I’m working on several pieces at the moment. First, a novel-length work called Snatch. It’s about sexuality and rape and mother-daughter angst. Oh, and football. Next, is a novel-length piece of historical fiction which I started for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers’ Month – see nanowrimo.org for details) last year. It’s entitled Zane and is the story of Betty Zane, her brother Isaac, and Wyandot princess Myeerah – set on the Ohio River frontier at the end of the Revolutionary War.
I have two completed short stories, which were co-written with Will Belegon: San Diego Sunset and Artistically Inclined. (Excerpts of each can be found on my blog!) We’re hoping both will be picked up by Phaze.
A short F/F piece entitled Hallowing Eve will appear in the March issue of Torquere Press’ Fresh Off the Vine.
I won’t bore you with the LONG list of partially-completed short stories. *grin* - Let's talk about "fine flickering hungers." The name is very intriguing. Can you talk about the book and what the term “fine flickering hungers” means to you?
The title is taken from a poem entitled The Moon Is Always Female by my favorite poet, Marge Piercy. Here is the passage:

It has come to symbolize all of the desires we keep locked inside – all of the wicked sexy thoughts that we don’t dare voice or act upon. Things like tying your best friend to a tree and mercilessly seducing her – like masturbating in a confessional – like having ghouls tongue fuck you – like blowing a tour guide in the rain forest. Yeah, things just like that. ;) - Besides writing erotica, you spend a lot of your time crusading for the disadvantaged, ranting about injustice. What kinds of things have you done for the disadvantaged and regarding injustices?
You name it! I’ve picketed. I’ve soapboxed. I’ve written a gazillion letters to legislators. I’ve kissed ass, and I’ve kicked it. I’ve testified before legislative committees. I’ve lobbied. I’ve chaired boards and committees. I’ve fund raised. I’ve done radio shows. The only thing I haven’t yet done is get arrested for civil disobedience – but I’m young(ish), and it’s always nice to have goals. - How would you describe yourself and your personality? And are you like any of the characters that you write about?
The easiest way to describe myself would be to tell you than I am an “INFJ” on the Myers-Briggs Personality Profile. (Google if you’re unfamiliar. Fascinating stuff!) Every description I’ve read of that type is so accurate it’s downright spooky. I’m like most of my strong, female characters in several ways: resourceful, irreverent, bisexual, witty, and … humble. *grin* - What would you like to see for your career as a writer? Do you want to write any other writing genres? Do you have any long term or short term goals either in writing or other than writing that you would like to share?
Wow! My “career” as a writer. Has a nice ring to it. First, I suppose, I should start THINKING of it as a career instead of a deliciously naughty little (well, BIG) secret, huh? I have no aspirations to branch into other genres. Sex is just too damned much fun! I simply want what I do write to be published and appreciated. Judging from the reviews for both Erotique and fine flickering hungers, it is certainly appreciated.

Mandy stands to inherit the family legacy – a famous Philadelphia adult toy store and museum called Erotique – but she first has to meet the terms of the will and spend the night. With the help of her best friend, Bruce, she soon discovers the exhibits are VERY educational and her feelings for Bruce run deeper than she realized. - fine flickering hungers (November 2005 from Phaze)
A finalist in the first annual Fruity Awards, fine flickering hungers is a collection of eight erotic short stories with accompanying poetry. Sexual scenarios vary from hetero- to mono- to homosexual to group, with the only common thread being that they seldom (if ever) take place in a bed.
- Erotique (October 2005 from Phaze)
- Is there a genre that makes you uncomfortable to write? Would you write it in spite of your discomfort if your publisher asked you to submit a story of that genre?
There are some genres which are less familiar to me than others and as such, the words don’t flow as easily from my mind and my fingertips. However, if my publisher asked me to submit work in a particular genre, I would be very flattered and would do my best to rise to the challenge.
Under no circumstances will I produce work – in any genre – which I feel would perpetuate bigotry, hatred, or violence. There’s too much of that in the world already. - Do you lock yourself away when writing? And when do you normally write?
I wish I had the luxury of seclusion while writing! I would prefer to write in the mornings – when my ideas seem to pop – but with an active family that’s not always possible. Instead, I tend to sneak short periods of writing in between the cooking, laundry, housework, banking, soccer games, grocery shopping, homework, etc. By the time the kids are tucked away for the night, I’m ready to unwind with a good book, an online game of euchre with my bestest buddy, or some sexy “research” in the bedroom. - Do you take your work with you when you go on vacation with the family?
What is this “vacation” thing of which you speak?
In this field, to think is to work – and my mind is always working (usually on the erotic). I almost always have my computer with me “just in case” I get a few minutes to write. Plus, I keep a journal handy for jotting down random inspiration. - Are you addicted to writing? If yes, why do you think you are addicted?
I am addicted to the rush that comes through creativity and problem-solving. I need a productive outlet for those energies to stave off the depression and apathy. When my writing evokes the desired emotional response in the reader, it is a phenomenal high. - If you had an opportunity to travel in time, where would you go and in what time period? Why?
There are times in the past I’d love to visit – as an observer, not a participant – just to determine the veracity of the historical accounts. However, if I’m to go as a participant, I’d have to choose the future – particularly a future lacking the divisive attitudes about individuality which are prevalent today. - If you could bring any character from a book alive so that you could spend time with them, who would it be? Do you think you would be able to form an emotional relationship with them?
I’m assuming you mean one of MY characters, so I’d have to say Mandy – from Erotique. She is strong-willed, competent, daring, and sexy – all qualities I admire. I think we could be great friends – perhaps even more. - Once you brought this character to life, if s/he isn’t like you had believed, would you be willing to make them disappear, or wait to see if you can find the person within that you were looking for?
I would never intentionally harm another person – especially one I “brought to life.” If my creation was not as desired, we’d simply go our separate ways. - Do you believe people are willing to purchase erotic books in paperback in the same quantities as they do in e-book? Why?
It really depends on the environment and on the book. I think that as far as erotic literature is concerned, e-books are preferred because sexual subject matter is still viewed as something to be concealed. Visitors to your home might notice The Story of O on your bookshelf, but they’ll never know what’s on your computer. You might not dare open your print copy of The Erotic Adventures of Sleeping Beauty while waiting to board your flight, but on a PDA, it’s at your fingertips with none the wiser. - E-books are a growing product line. Do you believe e-books are a good way to publish? Why?
If you’d ask me this question a year ago, I would’ve probably said that anything less than print was not “real” publishing. I now know better. While I can’t say I’m a true fan of e-books (as a consumer – yet), I do appreciate the market and think it provides a perfect niche for shorter works that is missing in the print world.
I really like the way my publisher (Phaze) handles things: book-length titles are released as e-books and when/if they reach certain sales benchmarks, they go to print.
When I read, I do prefer to hold a print book in my hands. Part of that is due to eye strain and physical comfort, but part is just habit. I think that as the technology improves and PDAs & e-book readers become more common (prevalent, for example, in public libraries and schools), the market will gradually shift away from print books. - When you receive a contract do you read it before signing, or do you have someone else read it and tell you what it contains?
I read the contract myself before even submitting work to a publisher. If a sample contract is not available online, I’m not interested. Period. - Do you have a collection? What do you collect?
I do! I can’t explain the allure, but I collect decorative bird cages. Go figure.
While not exactly a “collection,” I also have an office supply fetish. Family members give me gift certificates to places like Office Depot because they know I just love those fancy printer papers, labels, document protectors (*drool*), sticky notes, pens, blank journals, etc. My file cabinets are just full of the stuff, most of which will never be used (although I do occasionally fondle it). - Time travel is an interesting thought, if you could live in the past, do you think you could be happy without the luxuries we have now? What do you think you would miss the most?
Once I have something which makes life easier, I don’t want to do without it for any length of time (if at all). But, sure, I could be happy in the past. As for “luxuries,” I’d most miss the modern bathroom. I’m not sure I could ever be truly relaxed and comfortable if I felt unclean. - What is your favorite dessert?
Skin. - Writing is stressful on the body, although many don’t realize it. Do you pamper you body to relax it? How?
I find that extensive research of sex toys is wonderfully relaxing. It’s also a tax write-off. *wink* Can’t beat that!
I do also occasionally indulge in a professional massage, but right now – at least until I really start thinking of it as “work” – writing IS a form of relaxation for me. - Has the internet helped the publishing business in your opinion?
Without a doubt – especially, as I mentioned earlier, for short stories and poetry. - If your latest book was chosen to be made into a movie, which actors would you choose to play the parts of the main characters?
Oh, my selections would probably be vetoed by the producers because I wouldn’t choose “eye candy” to bring my characters to life. I prefer to stick to the written word, anyway – to the “mind candy.” It’s waaaaaay sexier. - What genre do you believe to be the most intriguing? Why?
Anything that relates to sex is intriguing. Desire, motivation, love/hate, exploration, personal growth – sex covers ‘em all. Romance, in and of itself, probably interests me the least. I like character-driven works in all genres. - What genre do you prefer to write? Why?
I’d have to say that contemporary erotica is my strongest suit, although I’ve enjoyed my forays into the paranormal and historical realms. - Is there anything you would like to tell our readers that I haven’t covered?
